If anything goes wrong expose the error message in a notification, dialog, ... Whenever I have to configure my email again it takes me at least an hour to figure out what is wrong and have to debug the code when the emails are not sent. It must be worse for users see eg #8996

In general wherever someone can configure something we should offer a "test" button but this is not part of this issue.

good point!
with this, test button for mobile/text message should be added too => new issue?

👍 it would help user help themselves, therefore reducing support requests
