If custom date range is set, the time unit is fixed to "day". I'd like to overview 5 years summed up monthly. It would be nice to have a selection ... day/week/month/... in the calendar in custom date range mode too.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? to view years summed up monthly you can go to Visitors overview, select period = month, then change items in the graph to show 50 or 100 and you can see metric grouped by month - does it help?

I think maybe your request is similar to #955 - do you mind posting your idea and suggestion in #955 ? cheers

Thank's for your hint. I'm a beginner and have taken the entries of the drop down box for something related to the comments. Asked for a solution in the german Piwik forum but probably not exactly enough. So I've got the recommendation to open a ticket. I'm satisfied now.
