Not opening piwik as often as i should, i did more than once, look at some graph like visitors/day and think for a moment
why is it so low today? and then realize, ah, this is the live data part, i can compare the latest value against the rest only tomorrow, this will change during the day.

It's a small detail, but actually, if a graph shows SOMEDATA / Day, the last data point is showning SOMEDATA / Day/PARTOFDAY, so the data is strictly speaking WRONG!

To correct that, i'd suggest to do something like change the color of the last dot+line, (change the line style to dashed), add some text to the tooltip explaining the live data VS historical data.
and/or
multiply the last=live data by the neccessary value to adjust it to a full day: DATA = DATA * 1/[part-of-day-passed]

Thanks for the report. You're right that many users get confused by the fact that "today's stats" are often lower than yesterday (since the day is not finished).

Ideas:

  • Maybe we could display a notification somewhere in the UI "Note: you are viewing reports for "today" and the day is not finished".
  • In the calendar we could append (today) when the date is today, eg. 2014-08-20 (today)
  • in the all Websites dashboard, we could process the green/red Percentages not compared to the full day of yesterday, but compared to the ratio of visits that happened Yesterday until the hour of the current day. the result would be a more realistic % Evolution in the All Websites dashboard.

Maybe other users reading this have more thoughts?

Yes. My point was also specifically about the graphs which show data from the past until today, eg. the visits over time on the dashboard. They all point down in the end, because the last data point is today's data SO FAR.
So my suggestion is to differentiate the end of such graph's, see above for details.
