I'm worried this could create problems if https cannot be called on some servers. I prefer not to fix as to prevent users from accessing latest versions.

Hi,
as Matt mentioned via mail, api.piwik.org has now its own certificate. So it would be nice to set https://api.piwik.org by default on new installs.
