The general use case is an operation that is deferred because it entails lengthy computation and/or network latency.

Examples:

  • #134 - disabling provider plugin's gethostbyaddr
  • #1652 - lat/long to region

Would this be a pre-archiving task, or part of archiving?

Maybe we could add a notion of "Pre-archiving scheduled task" ?

Right now we have "Scheduled tasks" which are run post archiving. We could have similar hook just before starting the archive.

This would work well when the cron archive is setup, but not so well when the reports are processed in the browser. It would make things a lot slower.

+1 for pre-archiving scheduled task when browser archiving is disabled. Makes the most sense at the moment. We can flesh this idea out more, if needed, after #134 and #1652.

GeoIP with Apache or PECL drivers works super fast (and we can now enjoy the fast lookup for ISP too!) .
