If you want to get the total number of unique visitors in a year, it can't be achieved with the API. You only get the number of the year when piwik was installed:

http://demo.piwik.org/index.php?module=API&method=VisitsSummary.getUniqueVisitors&idSite=1&period=year&date=yesterday&format=Html&token_auth=anonymous

http://demo.piwik.org/index.php?module=API&method=VisitsSummary.getUniqueVisitors&idSite=1&period=year&date=2009-01-01&format=Html&token_auth=anonymous

Known limitation for performance reasons.
