Summary

Just report an interesting feature request published in the forum: https://forum.matomo.org/t/ability-to-customize-order-of-reports-in-email-reports/38573

A little background to start --> We are heavy users of the custom reports. We have built out several high-level report categories and subcategories to help us organize our reports that we want all matomo users to have access to. The subcategories each represent different pages of interest. For example, we may have something like the following:

Behavior

  • Pages (stock)
  • Entry Pages (stock)
  • Exit Pages (stock)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr1 (with ~10+ custom reports found inside)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr2 (with ~10+ custom reports found inside)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr3 (with ~10+ custom reports found inside)

When it comes to email reporting, currently the reports are all listed in a sort of sporadic random order when compiling an > email report. In the actions category, I will have the stock reports that Matomo curates mixed in with various different custom reports we have created. For example:

Actions

  • Actions – Main Metrics (Stock)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr1 - Custom Report nbr1
  • Custom Subcategory nbr2 - Custom Report nbr4
  • Users Flow (Stock)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr1 - Custom Report nbr2
  • Custom Subcategory nbr2 - Custom Report nbr1
  • Exit Pages (Stock)
  • Outlinks (Stock)
  • Custom Subcategory nbr2 - Custom Report nbr3

When the emails are sent out, the reports are sent out in that same order. This makes it extremely unfortunate because it causes the email reports to appear very disorganized and does not allow for there to be a natural flow to the email. We would love the ability to either group the reports based on the subcategory or allow us to structure the order of the report. That way we can ensure that the email report follows a logical flow and allow the recipient to consume the data easily.

Will this feature be implemented?
This would be a great function, especially if you work with custom reports

@jr-ewing I'm not aware of any plans to implement that in the near future. But I've put the issue in our prioritization queue, so our product team will re-evaluate that at some time.

Interesting fact: the order was working for some weeks in January at least according to custom report index number.
Since Matomo update to 4.13.3 order is completely random again.

Proposed Expected behavior:

  • Reports in emails are grouped by Category
  • Within a category, reports are sorted alphabetically

Would that work well?

Because we sorted our custom reports alphabetically that would be a solution for us.
I can imagine some people would find it helpful to sort all activated reports (stock and custom).

@mattab I would suggest to change the way how those reports are created. Currently we have a long list of checkboxes of reports. Instead we could also have some sort of select, which would then allow to add a certain report. Those reports would then be added to a list, which will then be used in this order for generating the reports. Additionally we could also make this report list sortable using drag and drop.

I agree with you @sgiehl
This allows then also to display some reports several times but with some differences in settings (period, display type, segment, etc.)

Had a customer request recently that being able to sort the sections of an Email Report into a chosen order, would be very useful.

FYI: As workaround we're currently using a Dashboard based on our custom reports. Reports stay in order there

A large customer asked for this today.

EMAIL REPORTS: No possibility to reorder sections
