Browser: Firefox 56.0 or Google Chrome 61.0.3163.100 (64-Bit)
Client OS: macOS 10.12.6
Server OS: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
PHP: 7.0.22-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

Clicking on the "Regenerate" button for "API Authentication Token" leads to logout not a new auth token.

Any hint, what is my mistake appreciated.

Sorry for silence and late answer: Version 3.2.0 - should be the latest stable version as of today

That's confirmed, this is "by design" currently. This should be fixed with #12208 Sessions with more security, where token_auth won't be tied to the authenticated session.
